Getting Started using Protecode

To start protecoding, you go through the steps of defining a policy, assigning a policy to projects/developers, and downloading the plug-in and installing it. This should not take more than 5-10 minutes.

  1. Register as an Administrator. Start by creating an online account on our administration site: You choose a user ID (usually your email address) and a password. You fill a profile for yourself (includes name of your organization, if any, that gets stamped on your pedigree files). You will receive an automated email, with a link that will activate your account as an administrator.
  2. Define a policy - saying what licenses are acceptable in your project, what to do in case the policy is violated, and optionally, for good record keeping, what type of license you want to develop your software under and what the terms of that license are generally a text file url address.
  3. Assign the policy to a project - by exporting it to the project either manually or with CVS/SVN to the root of the tree of the project.
  4. Assign it to developers (we call this inviting protecoders). Your developers will receive an email, saying that you have invited them to use Protecode, and a link that activates their registration and lets them download the plug-in. The plug-in installation follows standard Eclipse process.
  5. If there is no policy assigned, the Protecode Tracker will still generate pedigree files and a default policy (allowing all licenses) will be used.

That's it!  You and your developers are ready to use Protecode. Pedigree files will be created automatically for you and external content records will be generated as the project is developed. You can run a report any time you wish on a file/folder/project by right-clicking and selecting Protecode Report from the pull down menu.

It is simple, fast, and there is no commitment or risk. If you decide you don't want it for any reason, just uninstall the plug in and delete all log files (.wd files). We do not spam. We do not keep or obtain any other info apart from what you give us. Our Privacy Agreement is simple and straight forward.

By clicking on the green "Secure Admin" button below right, you will be taken to the Secure Protecode Administration site to start the first step of registration.Secure Admin

We work in an agile development environment ourselves at Protecode. Regular updates, approximately every two weeks will be available via the Eclipse upgrade process. We also look for any constructive feedback you may have, or features/capabilities you like to see.

There are Protecode online help files available via normal Eclipse help.

  • At any time, Protecode can be purchased (please see purchase page for options) – purchasing is done via the Protecode Administration website
  • At the end of the evaluation the client will cease to work – login will not be permitted and new development will proceed without pedigree record generation, as it did before the trial.
